The Flemish National Union (Vlaamsch Nationaal Verbond, VNV) was a Nationalist Flemish political party in Belgium, founded by Staf de Clerq on October 8, 1933. De Clerq became known as den Leider ("The Leader").

The VNV was tied to the idea of uniting the many Flemish parties in post-1920s Belgium into a single movement, an objective finally attained with the party's creation, and it moved on to advocate the creation of a pan-Dutch state, called Dietsland, being Flanders and the North Netherlands. The slogan was: Authority, Discipline and Dietsland. Along the way, the new party became more and more authoritarian in doctrine, and it quickly became a Fascist movement, despite including a large grouping of democratic elements.

A first election victory was gained in 1936. Altough facing enormous problems and being blocked by other political organizations and the press, they had victory after victory in the elections. By 1940 the VNV was a major political party. But until 1941 they kept a strict neutrality, even against Germany. This changed later in the war (when Russia was fighting the Germans) and they openly called upon volunteers for the Eastern Front.

In 1942 Staf de Clerq died and was replaced by Hendrik Elias. The drafting for the Eastern front continued and the end of WW2 ended the VNV, members were prosecuted and jailed or executed in some cases.

Please note that this buckle was worn by uniformed personnel of the party only, not every member of the party had a uniform! Only the officials.

Everybody could be a party member but did not wear a uniform, hence the rarity of this buckle.
